Prepare Students for the LEAP Assessments with LEAP Practice Tests
Before your students take the LEAP, they need practice and preparation to ensure they're ready for the spring assessment. With LEAP practice tests, getting ready for the real LEAP tests is easier than ever, and your students will be able to bound ahead to new learning in no time!
Here's everything you need to know about LEAP assessments, LEAP practice tests, and preparing your students.
What is LEAP?
Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) are annual tests given to students beginning in third grade to assess their mastery of state learning standards. The tests are used with report cards, classroom work, and educator-created tests to understand students' academic achievement and identify students needing more significant support.
LEAP tests cover the following subjects:
- English language arts (grades 3-8)
- Mathematics (grades 3-8)
- Science (grades 3-8)
- Social studies (grades 3-8)
Grades 4 and 8 also take the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), which informs statewide performance reports but does not return scores for individual students.
LEAP high school end-of-course exams cover:
- English I
- English II
- Algebra I
- Geometry
- Biology
- U.S. History
In order to graduate, high school students must pass one EOC test in each of three pairs:
- Mathematics: Algebra or Geometry
- Biology or U.S. History
- English: English II or III for students who entered high school before 2017-2018; English I or II for students who entered high school in or after 2017-2018
All LEAP tests are timed; time periods depend on grade level and exam subject, most tests, especially for the lower grades, range between 60- and 90-minute limits. LEAP Connect assessments are available for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
In the past, poor LEAP test scores in 4th and 8th grade automatically resulted in students being held back a year. Still, beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, that policy was changed to allow for greater flexibility in addressing low LEAP test scores. The local education agency now determines whether to promote or retain a low-scoring student. Regardless of that decision, such students must be provided with an individual academic improvement plan to address the subject areas where they scored poorly. Schools can provide opportunities for tutoring, summer classes, or other approaches to support students without hampering their progress in other subject areas.
How to Use LEAP Practice Tests to Prepare Your Students
Every year, the Louisiana Department of Education publishes practice tests in every subject area and grade level tested by LEAP. These LEAP practice tests give you and your students a chance to become familiar with the type of content they will be tested on and the question styles they can expect on the real LEAP test.
Some of these question styles include:
- Multiple choice
- Evidence-based selected response
- Multiple select
- Technology-enhanced items
- Prose constructed response
- Keypad input
With LEAP practice tests, your students can gain confidence for test day and be sure they have the practical skills to navigate the computer-based test.
LEAP Practice Tests Are Available Now in Pear Assessment
To make administering the LEAP practice tests as easy as possible, Pear Assessment (formerly Edulastic) has already uploaded the LEAP practice tests to the Pear Assessment Public Library. By setting up a free account, you can introduce your students to the Pear Assessment testing environment, and help them familiarize themselves with the LEAP practice test content and the virtual testing tools they'll need to know for test day.
With Pear Assessment, your students can practice using the same device they'll use for the real LEAP exam: a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. They'll learn the keyboarding and navigation skills they need from the first question to their final answer on the LEAP test while dragging and dropping, filling information into tables, creating equations, and using the correct keyboard commands.
