What Is WVGSA?
The West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) is an annual test for students in grades 3 through 8 that measures their learning against the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards. Designed to measure academic performance on the state, district, school, and individual levels, the assessments provide insights that students, educators, and administrators can use to improve the educational experience. WVGSA tests also provide insight into the effectiveness of the statewide educational system.
WVGSA tests cover the following subjects and grades:
- English language arts (grades 3–8)
- Mathematics (grades 3–8)
- Science (grades 5 and 8)
For high school students, West Virginia administers the SAT via SAT School Day in grade 11 as the accountability measure for math and ELA standards.
Students with significant cognitive disabilities take the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment, Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM). This assessment covers the same grades and subjects as the WVGSA tests and the SAT, and is based on the West Virginia Alternate Academic Achievement Standards for ELA, math, and science.
Along with the standard tests, students who are English learners take the English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century (ELPA 21). This assessment measures students’ mastery of the English language.
WVGSA and SAT exams are delivered digitally. The WVGSAW tests in mathematics and English language arts are computer-adaptive, so the tests become harder or easier based on a student’s answers to questions. ELA tests are composed of reading and writing sections, and WVGSA tests include technology-enhanced questions along with standard multiple choice.
